Diplomats Edge Dickinson

LANCASTER, Pa. – Brandon Beckford capitalized on his team's defense, with six points in the final three minutes, to lift No. 13 Franklin & Marshall to a 65-62 victory over Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action.

F&M (15-1, 8-1 CC) trailed 57-54 with 3:15 remaining in the game when Beckford scored to cut the deficit to one point, 57-56, at 2:54. Georgio Milligan pilfered the ball on the next possession leading to a Hayk Gyokchyan layup, which put the Diplomats up 58-57. Gerry Wixted put the Red Devils (7-9, 4-5 CC) back on top with a bucket seconds later.  Jon Salandra turned the ball over, but made up for it with a blocked shot to keep Dickinson off the board. Milligan found Salandra on the other end of the court for a 60-59 F&M lead with 45 seconds remaining the game.

Gyokchyan got in on the defensive effort on the Red Devils' next possession with a block, which led to Milligan hitting one-for-two from line to push F&M's lead to 61-59.  Beckford took over from there, hitting all four of his free throws in the final 12 seconds, to secure the victory.

The Diplomats led the majority of the second half, leading by as many as nine points, 46-37, at 11:31.  F&M went up 54-47 at 6:45 before Dickinson went on an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the half, 55-54, at 4:19. Tucker Landy hit two from line at 3:15, setting up the final three minutes of action.

F&M jumped out to an early 6-2 lead four minutes into the contest, but Dickinson countered with a 7-2 run to tie the game at nine. The teams traded buckets over the next eight minutes before the Diplomats pulled away to go up five points, 22-17, at 3:51. F&M extended its lead to seven, 30-23, with ten seconds left, but Adam Honig hit a trey as time expired for a 30-26 halftime score.

Milligan scored a game-high 21 points with six assists. Beckford finished with 12 on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor and 6-for-6 from the line. Salandra tallied 10 points with nine boards.

Wixted led Dickinson with 20 points and Honig finished with 18.

The Diplomats forced 18 turnovers that resulted in 18 points and held a 35-29 advantage on the glass.

F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats travel to McDaniel for a 3:00 p.m. game.
