LANCASTER, Pa. – Four players scored in double-figures to lead Franklin & Marshall to an 85-56 victory over SUNY-Canton in the 2017 Sponaugle New Year's Tournament Monday evening at the Mayser Center. F&M improved to 7-3, while the Kangaroos dropped to 5-7.
F&M trailed early, 9-6, four minutes into the game, but answered with a 14-3 spurt to take the lead for good. Canton came within six, 20-14, at 9:20 before the Diplomats went on 19-2 run to go up 23. F&M held at least a 20-point edge the remainder of the half and went into the break with a 49-23 lead.
The Diplomats continued to control the contest in the second and increased their lead to 30, 73-43, with a little less than eight minutes left to play. F&M led by as many as 32 down the stretch and cruised to the victory.
Brandon Federici led all scorers with 26 points on 11-for-18 shooting. Julius Stoma netted 18 points with nine rebounds and Ignas Slyka recorded 11 for F&M. Lionel Owona hauled in 14 boards with nine points while Jared Wright chipped in seven.
Romario Fletcher had a team-high 19 points for Canton, Sam Annorh finished with 12 and Rashad Richardson end the day with 10 points.
F&M outshot Canton 49-30-percent, held a 45-38 edge on the glass and converted 27 turnovers into 33 points.
The Diplomats return to action tomorrow evening when the Diplomats take on Case Western Reserve -- a 67-65 winner over PSU-Harrisburg -- in the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
