SWARTHMORE, Pa. – J.C. McGrath scored a career-high 30 points to lead Franklin & Marshall to an 83-66 victory over No. 16 Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) basketball action. The win is the third this week for F&M as the Diplomats improved to 10-5, 4-4 CC while the Garnet fell to 12-3, 6-2 CC.
Tied at 6-6 early in the game, F&M went on an 11-0 run with three triples from Brandon Federici to put the Diplomats out in front with a 15-8 lead. The Diplomats went up 11, 23-12, with 9:32 remaining in the half, but Swarthmore scored four straight to come within seven. F&M answered with an 11-0 run to go up 33-16 at 5:31 and netted four consecutive points to close out the half and take a 42-24 lead into the break.
Federici scored 13 in the opening frame and McGrath recorded 12 on 5-for-6 shooting.
F&M led 47-30 three minutes into the second and went on an 11-2 run to take a 26-point, 58-32, lead at 12:50. The Garnet slowly chipped away and cut the deficit to 13, 70-57, at 4:02 and made it an 11-point game, 77-66, with 1:05 left to play. The Diplomats hit all six shots from the line down the stretch and McGrath put the final points on the board to secure the victory.
McGrath shot 10-for-14 from the field and hit all 10 shots from the line for his 30 points. He also added nine boards. Federici netted 21 while Jared Wright finished with 13 points and five assists. Hunter Eggers added nine points and Ignas Slyka finished with seven assists and three steals for F&M.
Chris Bourne paced the Garnet with 18 and Robbie Walsh finished with 17. Cam Wiley had 12 and Sam Lebryk reach double-figures with 10 points.
F&M outshot Swarthmore 55-48-percent, and scored 30 points off turnovers.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when F&M hosts Dickinson at 8:00 p.m.
