COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — Trailing by two with three minutes left, Franklin & Marshall put together a 12-2 run to close out the game and defeat Ursinus 77-69 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Thursday evening. F&M remains unbeaten this season and improved to 6-0, 2-0 CC while the Bears fell to 3-2, 1-1 CC.
After a slow start, Ursinus took a 9-6 lead five minutes into the game. Both teams struggled to shot with the Bears leading 16-9 at 11:12. F&M put together an 8-2 spurt to come within one, 18-17, before the Bears answered and went out front 30-24 with three minutes left to play. The Diplomats countered with a 7-4 run to trail by just three, 34-31, heading into the break.
Ursinus netted five straight to start out the second and went up 41-34 at 16:56. F&M trailed by five, 48-43, after an Ignas Slyka jumper at 13:03, but the Bears scored five unanswered to go out from by 10, 53-43, at 12:06. The Bears took their largest lead of the game, 63-49, with a little more than eight to go, but F&M answered with a 14-0 run over the next four minutes and tied the game at 63-63 at 4:09. The teams traded baskets and Ursinus went up 67-65, before F&M closed out the game with a 12-2 run.
Ignas Slyka led all scorers with 28 points, hitting 11-for-21 from the floor and ended the game with five boards. Brandon Federici went 9-for-12 from the line to tally 21 points and Matt Groll ended with 12 points and 10 boards for his third double-double of the season.
F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats host Haverford at 3:00 p.m.
