F&M Advances to Sponaugle Championship

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall defeated Randolph 78-53 in the second game of the Sponaugle New Year's Tournament Friday evening. F&M will face Delaware Valley – a 75-72 winner over Hartwick – in tomorrow's championship game at 4:00 p.m. Hartwick takes on Randolph at 2:00 p.m. in the consolation game. 

After a slow start, F&M trailed 11-8 at 11:41, but the Diplomats went on an 18-3 run led by Brandon Federici to go up 26-14 with a little less than five minutes to play. Federici scored 13 points in the run, including three triples. The Wildcats answered and came within seven, 28-21, at 2:11, but F&M closed out the half with five unanswered and went into the break with a 33-21 advantage. 

Federici led all scorers in the opening frame with 14 points and Justin Kupa chipped in five off the bench. 

Matt Redhead netted eight straight to start the second. After a three by Randolph, F&M went on a 14-3 run over the next six minutes to take a 55-27 lead at 12:49. Matthew Tate put F&M up 31, 62-31, at 10:41, but the Wildcats answered and came within 23, 65-42, at 6:37. The Diplomats countered with a 12-2 spurt and took their largest lead of the game, 77-45, at 2:03 and cruised to the victory. 

Federici led all scorers with 20 points and Tate finished with 10 points and eight assists. Redhead ended with 11 points and six rebounds while Matt Groll and J.C. McGrath both finished with six. 

Sammy Hooper led Randolph with 14 points.
