CHESTERTOWN, Md. – No. 22 Franklin & Marshall picked up an 82-73 victory over Washington in Centennial Conference (CC) action Thursday evening. F&M improved to 12-2, 6-1 CC while the Shoremen fell to 4-10, 1-6 CC.
After a 5-0 spurt by F&M to start out the game, the teams traded buckets and neither team led by more than three points until Washington went out front 20-16 at 9:08. F&M answered with six straight to go ahead 22-20, before the Shoremen went back out front, 29-27, with a little less than three minutes left in the half and took a 32-29 lead into the break.
The Shoremen increased their lead to 35-31 early in the second and F&M tied the game a few minutes later at 35-35. The teams exchanged leads over the next six minutes before the Shoremen took a 49-43 edge at 11:17. F&M answered with a 7-0 spurt to go out front 50-49. With the game tied at 53-53 with 7:27 left to play, F&M pulled away with five straight and took the lead for good. Washington came within a three, 68-65 with 1:52 left to play, but F&M closed out the game strong by outscoring the Shoremen 14-8 down the stretch.
Brandon Federici hit 10-for-10 from the stripe and netted 8-for-18 from the floor to lead all scorers with 31. Ignas Slyka had 16 points and five assists and J.C. McGrath netted 13 and pulled down a career-high 22 rebounds.
F&M outshot Washington 50-44-percent and held a commanding 42-25 edge on the glass.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday when F&M hosts No. 9 Swarthmore at 3:00 p.m.
