Diplomats Place Third at Mid-Atlantic Regionals

LEWISBERRY, Pa. - Both Franklin & Marhsall's men's and women's crews placed third at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships held at Gifford Pinchot State Park on Saturday.
"The Franklin and Marshall crews served notice to the Mid-Atlantic Region that the Diplomats will be a team to reckon with in the very near future," noted Head Coach Claus Wolter.
Franklin & Marshall wrapped up its second varsity season of the sport with Saturday's races.
Johns Hopkins won the championship with 34 points, while Washington College was second with 27. F&M finished third scoring 21 points to beat out six teams: Rutgers-Camden, Marietta, University of Mary Washington, North Park (IL), Richard Stockton, and Bryn Mawr.
The morning heat for women's varsity 8 saw the fifth seeded Diplomats upset fourth-seeded North Park. The Diplomats finished six seconds behind Washington College.
In the afternoon final, Washington College led the field from the outset followed by University of Mary Washington, Marietta, and Franklin & Marshall. Caitlin Knierim, Mary Emert, Sarah Clark, Chelsea McIntyre, Alexandra Merrick, Erin Bradley, Rebecca Weast, Brittany George and coxswain Jan Heddens, rowed the race for the Diplomats.
Places five through 10 went to Mary Washington "B", Johns Hopkins, Bryn Mawr, North Park, Richard Stockton and Rutgers-Camden.
In the men's varsity, F&M finished in second, six seconds behind Johns Hopkins University. The Diplomats posted a 25-second margin on Rutgers-Camden's rowers. Ho Hong Lau, William Reigel, Ian Clunie, Ron Nahass, Daniel Falciani, Patrick Maloney, Brent Schneider, Conor Borak and coxswain Joseph Dernbach made up the Diplomats' men's varsity eight.
Racing later in the afternoon, the Diplomats boated a novice/freshman crew and finished six seconds behind Johns Hopkins again with Rutgers-Camden 15 seconds behind F&M. The Diplomat crew was comprised of Ho Hong Lau, William Reigel, Joseph Dernbach, Ariel Reiter, Ian Clunie, Patrick Maloney, Brent Schneider, Conor Borak and coxswain Erin Feeney.
