LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College's Department of Athletics and Recreation announced the 2010 football slate on Wednesday afternoon. The schedule features one new addition in Centennial Conference (CC) associate member Susquehanna, as well as the shuffling of several games.
For the fifth time in as many years, the Diplomats will open with Washington & Lee. The September 4 meeting will also serve as the home opener.
"We like the matchup with the Generals," said Diplomats' Head Coach, John Troxell. "They are a similar institution in terms of both academics and athletics, and they provide us with a tough challenge right off the bat every year."
The Washington & Lee game will be the first of three at home in September. The Diplomats host Ursinus in the Centennial opener on September 11, and then have a short turnaround before getting into the Conestoga Wagon Game on Friday, September 17.
"The early conference battles are a new reality now that the league is at nine teams," said Troxell. "We don't waste anytime getting into big games as it's drawn up."
After the battle for the wagon, the Diplomats close out September with a home contest against Juniata. The Diplomats close out the first half of the season with a road trip to Susquehanna. The trip to Selinsgrove is the first since F&M won 42-6 at Susquehanna in 1980. F&M and Susquehanna have played each other 10 times in a series that started in 1898.
The trip to Selinsgrove is the first of three on the road. The stretch is broken up by bye week before consecutive trips to the Lehigh Valley to face Moravian and Muhlenberg. The Diplomats return home for the Centennial's Maryland football contingent, McDaniel and Johns Hopkins. The meeting with McDaniel is the Homecoming contest and will kickoff at 1:30pm. F&M will close the season with traditional rival, Gettysburg.
In his fourth season at Franklin & Marshall, Troxell guided the Diplomats' 67-man roster to a 9-2 season and the ECAC South Atlantic Title. He was named the Centennial Conference's Coach of the Year by his peers and selected as the Offensive Coordinator or the South Team for the D3 Senior All-Star Classic. Three of his 67 players were selected to compete in postseason all-star games. F&M will return four all-conference players to the field in 2010.
