LANCASTER, Pa. – Two members of the Franklin & Marshall College football team were named to the ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District II College First Team when the squad was announced Thursday afternoon. Running back, John Kaschak (Jr. / Lake Hoptacong, N.J. / Jefferson Twp.) and defensive lineman, Mark Surma (Sr. / Philadelphia, Pa. / Central) earned the honor and will be considered for the ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-American Team.
Kaschak, a Business, Organizations and Society major, is in his third season as a starter in the Diplomats’ backfield. He has managed 4.1 yards per carry on 128 rushes this season and has carried the ball into the end zone five times. Kaschak has caught 36 passes for 291 yards (8.1 ypr) and found the end zone once in the passing game. Last year he was named the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl MVP after rushing for 127 yards and a touchdown. He also had seven catches for 54 yards and an additional touchdown in that game.
With 1,702 rushing yards in his career, Kaschak ranks sixth in F&M history, while his 16 touchdowns rank eighth in the program’s history. His 93 catches rank 12th all-time at F&M, while his 766 receiving yards are 32nd on the books.
A mathematics major, Surma has 3.5 sacks among his 22 tackles in 2010. He has also forced a fumble. Surma was a preseason Senior All-American and 2009 All-Centennial Second Team choice. Surma is a second-year captain and third-year starter. He has 8.5 career sacks and 14 tackles for total losses of 54 yards.
Kashack and Surma have led Franklin & Marshall to a 6-2 record heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. The pair helped the Diplomats to their first consecutive winning seasons since the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. The All-District team is voted upon by the district's Sports Information Directors. First team selections move on to Academic All-America balloting.
