Diplomats Fall to Bears

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall fell 21-9 to Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) football action Saturday afternoon. The Bears made the best of three major miscues by the Diplomats for their first win of the season.

Ursinus (1-2, 1-1 CC) struck first just two plays into its second drive in the second quarter with 4:48 remaining in the first half. Chris Curran found Al Desiderio down the sideline for a 79-yard score. Desiderio used a double-move and the Diplomats failed to redirect which led to the score.

F&M (0-3, 0-2 CC) answered on the ensuing possession to tie the game at seven apiece with 38 ticks remaining in the first half.  E.J. Schneider and Jordan Zackery connected three times for 38 yards on a 10-play, 66-yard scoring drive. The last connection was a 13-yard touchdown strike to knot game a 7-7 before the break.

Ursinus needed just two plays again, to go up 14-7, on a 13-yard jaunt by Bryan Ellis. The touchdown was set up when Mike Rissmiller picked off Schneider and took the ball to F&M 28.

The Bears took a 21-7 edge on a 14-play, 80-yard drive spanning 5:03.  The drive was kept alive by a questionable roughing the passer penalty after an incompletion on third and nine.  Instead of fourth and nine on the 16, Ursinus found itself with a first and goal on the eight and made it count with the touchdown at 10:03.

F&M had a chance to answer when it put together an 11-play, 46-yard drive down to the Ursinus 23. The Diplomats found themselves in a fourth and eight and failed to convert which sealed their fate.

F&M added two more points on a safety when the Bears' long snapper sailed a snap over the punters head to the back of the end zone to make it 21-9.

Lamont Jackson led the way on the ground for F&M with 48 yards on 15 touches and Alan Williams finished with 31 rushing yards. John Harrison went 16 of 26 for 80 yards through the air for F&M. Zachery picked up a team-high 57 receiving yards while Colton Weaver finished with 33 yards on four catches.

Brendan Wengerter spearheaded the defense with eight (6 solo, 2 assits) tackles. Kenny Provost had seven stops while Brian Velasco ended up with six.

F&M returns home Saturday when the Diplomats take on Juniata for Homecoming at 1:30 p.m.
