Week 8 Game Notes: Diplomats Look to Bounce Back Against Susquehanna

Saturday's Game: Susquehanna (3-4, 2-4 CC) at Franklin & Marshall (5-2, 4-2 CC)

Series History: Saturday's game marks the 16th meeting between Franklin & Marshall and Susquehanna with F&M leading the series 11-2-2. The first clash between the two teams came in 1898 in Selinsgrove. F&M won 6-0 on October 25 before both teams met again in Lancaster the following year and played to a 6-6 tie, the first of two ties in the series. F&M has won the previous two meetings.

Tanner Erisman completed 6-of-14 passes from 106 yards and a score while Zachary Bradley went 14-for-20 for 118 yards.

Logan Lewis led F&M with 46 yards on eight carries. Dave Shellhammer had 41 yards on seven touches while Taalib Gerald rushed 13 times for 28 yards.

Bobby Keyes had a game-high 99 yards on four grabs and a score and Andrew DeStefano hauled in six passes for 45 yards.

Brendan Daly led the defense with 13 tackles (11s) and 2.5 tackles for a loss (TFL). English had 3.5 TFLs and eight total stops while Jones ended with seven tackles for the Diplomats.

Susquehanna Last Week: For the first time since joining the Centennial Conference in 2010, the Susquehanna football team defeated Ursinus 48-21 Saturday afternoon.

Susquehanna (3-4, 2-4) racked up 24 first downs, 498 yards of total offense and 86 total plays against Ursinus (2-5, 1-5).

Seven different players accounted for at least one touchdown for SU, led by two rushing touchdowns from Kyle Neuschatz and two passing touchdowns by Nick Crusco. Neuschatz had a career day with 157 yards rushing on 19 carries. Crusco finished with 243 yards passing and zero picks on 31 pass attempts.

Patrick Cutillo had a game-high 10 catches for 135 yards.

The Crusader defense limited Ursinus to just 11 first downs and 249 yards of offense. Ursinus was 2-of-12 on third down and ran for just 83 yards all afternoon. SU was also able to hold an edge in time of possession (38:09).

The Last Meeting: Franklin & Marshall edged Susquehanna 13-8 last year on Nov. 1.

Susquehanna took the early lead when the Crusaders turned an interception into points as Spencer Hotaling connected on a 23-yard field goal at 7:31 in the first for a 3-0 SU edge.  F&M countered on its next possession when Jordan Zackery returned the ensuing kickoff close to midfield. Five plays later Matt Magarity connected with Zackery on a third-and-goal for a four-yard score to put F&M up 6-3. The ensuing point after was blocked, and Cody Miller scooped the ball up for the Crusaders and raced 98 yards down the field for two points, making the score 6-5 with 4:19 left in the first. 

Susquehanna had a chance to take the lead early in the second, but Sean Triandis blocked a 27-yard field goal attempt, keeping the Crusaders off the board. The Diplomats took over on their own 32 with 9:52 on the clock and put together a 13-play, 68-yard drive that took 7:32 off the clock. The drive featured a heavy dose of Scott LaValva who had nine rushes for 45 yards. Magarity found Paul McGann with a 14-yard strike to finish off the drive and put the Diplomats up 13-5. 

Magarity completed 13-of-19 passes for 91 yards with two scores and one interception. Zackery led all receivers with 58 yards on nine catches. 

LaValva went over the 100-yard plateau for the second week in a row with 26 rushes for 125 yards and Magarity added 60 on the ground on 12 carries. 

Ryan Young paced the defense with seven stops (6 solo) while Brendan Daly and Brian Velasco both finished with five solo stops and an assist apiece. Daly added a pass breakup to his stat line and Steve Elf picked up six solo stops, including one for a loss. 

The Last Meeting in Lancaster: Franklin & Marshall escaped with a 41-36 victory over Susquehanna last year on Nov. 2, 2013.

The game went back-and-forth all afternoon with 860 yards of offense by both teams with the Diplomats striking first.

E.J. Schneider completed 19-of-24 passes, including a perfect 11-for-11 in the second, for 246 yards and two scores and added 79 more on 14 rushes and two more scores.  

Frank Strumolo racked up 122 yards on 22 rushes and a score for the Diplomats.  

Jordan Zackery had 97 yards on seven receptions and a touchdown while Paul McGann finished with 72 on six catches. Tim Muller picked up 49 yards.  

F&M's offensive line of Ryan Ignatovig, Chad Tothero, Matthew Pisarcik, Sam Dickinson and Frank Seitz turned in their seven straight game without giving up a sack.

Billy Zwicharowski went 5-for-5 on PATs. 

Ryan Young led the way defensively with a game-high 15 tackles (5s). Brendan Wengerter had 12 stops (7s) including two for a loss while Chris DeStefano and Sam Butler both finished with eight each.
