No. 4 Washington Rallies To Defeat Diplomats

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Jimmy Kielek assisted on two man-up goals, before scoring the game winner to cap a 3-0 run late in the fourth quarter and lead No. 4 Washington to a 12-11 come-back victory over Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday night.

Down 11-9 with 8:28 left in the fourth quarter, Kielek aided in the Shoremen's (12-1, 7-1 CC) consecutive extra-man opportunities with an assist to Koly Kirby and then Nick Gregory to tie the game at 11-all. Kielek then scored the game-winning goal a feed from Kirby with 1:15 left to play to escape with the victory.

Chris Read led the Washington attack with five goals and Gorden Cohen tallied 17 saves in the net.

Mark Hild netted a hat trick and Bobby Atkins recorded four points with two goals and two assists. Chris Marcozzi had seven saves heading into the final half and finished with 15 on the night.

The Diplomats (7-5, 3-4 CC) scored five goals in the second quarter to take a 7-5 lead at halftime, but the Shoremen answered with five goals in the fourth quarter to make the difference and collect their 14th straight win over F&M.

Washington broke a 2-all tie after the first quarter with a goal from Keilek at the 11:35 mark of the second stanze for a brief 3-2 lead. From there, the Diplomats scored four straight goals to take their first and largest lead at 6-3.

Shane Brennan started the run with a goal off a pass from Noah Wilkinsky with 9:18 left in the quarter. Sean Oliver struck 19 seconds after the face-off, before Brennan returned the favor to Wilkinsky for a 5-3 advantage.

Hild got his second goal of the game from an Atkins assist, but Read tallied two goals in the final 2:24 including one with time expiring to keep it a visitors lead at 7-5. Atkins slipped in his second goal in between Read's two for F&M's seventh tally and fifth of the quarter.

The Shoremen got within one thanks to the identical combination of their last goal, Read from Kirby to make it 7-6. F&M and Washington exchanged goals for the rest of the third quarter with Wilkinsky and Oliver scoring for the Diplomats.

F&M took a two-goal lead into the fourth and Peter Moon made it three with an unassisted tally at 12:36.

The Shoremen answered back-to-back goals to and Hild finished a pass from Atkins to keep it a two-goal game. Washington took advantage of two Diplomat penalties and ended the game on a 3-0 run for the win.

F&M returns to action on Saturday against Gettysburg. Game time is 7 p.m.
