ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Shamar Douglass scored twice and dished out an assist while Adam Thompson recorded a shutout to lead Roanoke past Franklin & Marshall 4-0 on the first day of the 2008 Brothers Pizza Blue Jay Classic held by Elizabethtown on Friday night.
The Maroons netted two goals in each half, scoring all four goals in the first 52 minutes to collect their third win of the season and put themselves in contention to be named the tournament champions.
Michael Walter started the scoring in the 18th minute off of Douglass' short pass that led to an open goal. Four minutes before halftime, Roanoke put up its second goal when Jason Ryan's long throw in found the head of Jake Holt for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Douglass made it 4-0 with back-to-back goals in a span of five minutes in the second half to give the Maroons a comfortable lead with plenty of time left on the clock.
Not only did Thompson keep F&M off the board, but he also assisted Douglass in the 48th minute with a long punt that led to a one-touch shot and a three-goal lead for Roanoke.
Zack Zamek made four saves, while Adrian Heredia made one in the final 31:24 of the game.
The Diplomats will face SUNY Brockport tomorrow in the second day of the tournament. Game time is to be determined. If played at Elizabethtown, the game will begin at 5 p.m. If the venue switches to Franklin & Marshall due to anticipated heavy rain, the game will start at approximately 6 p.m.
