Diplomats Shut Out Washington
Sep 27, 2008LANCASTER, Pa. - The Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team scored two goals in each half and held Washington off the scoreboard for a 4-0 Centennial Conference (CC) victory on Saturday.
Adam Parr and Tom DeMaio netted their goals in the first half, while Graham Mandl and Matt Melino scored within a minute, 29 seconds apart in the final stanza to give the Diplomats (4-4, 1-1 CC) their first conference victory this season.
Parr registered his first collegiate goal after gathering the ball off a failed clear by a defender and blasting his shot past James Bedrock with 14:48 left in the first half, before DeMaio made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season.
With 3:42 remaining before halftime, DeMaio challenged a defender to gain control of the ball inside the box and slid a shot into the far left corner for a two-goal lead at intermission.
Matthew Krantz set up the third goal for F&M, sprinting in from the right side with the ball and sending the ball through the center of the box to Mandl. On the following play where the Diplomats got fouled just outside the box, Melino took the direct kick and his shot deflected off a defender and into the goal for a 4-0 lead.
The Shoremen (2-5, 0-2 CC) managed five shots on goal, but Zack Zamek made five saves before making way for Adrian Heredia to combine for the team shutout.
Tony Armiger gave Washington its best chance at getting on the board with a shot that made Zamek leave his feet and punch the ball over the crossbar in the 48th minute.
F&M returns to action on Wednesday against Gettysburg. Game time is 8 p.m.
