Corsini Thinks Better of OT
LANDISVILLE, Pa. - With 29 seconds left in regulation, Eric Corsini cashed in on Franklin & Marshall's second corner kick of the contest, sending a shot into the lower right corner of the goal to deliver the Diplomats (2-1) a 2-1 win over the University of La Verne (Calif.) Friday night.
Giuseppe Bua fired a shot that went out of bounds off of a Leopard (0-3) defender with 45 seconds left to set up the decisive corner. Matt Melino played the ball in along the right post to set up Corsini's first marker of the young season. The timely goal answered La Verne's late-game tally that made overtime seem likely. Taylor Hart put the Californian contingent on the board with a 20-yard blast in the 86th minute. It was the only one of the Leopards' five shots on goal that bested Diplomats' keeper, Zach Zamek.
Prior to Hart's goal, the Diplomats appeared to be headed towards a 1-nil victory on the strength of Eddie Stene's 28-yard blast into the top corner of the net in the game's opening minutes. La Verne's Ryan Thompson was unable to secure the bender. Thompson stopped six of F&M's shots before the night was out.
The contest was played in a steady downpour. The game had been slated for play on Elizatbethtown's grass, however, the 24 hours of steady rain moved play onto the turf of Hempfield High School. The Diplomats return to action tomorrow for the second half of the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay Classic. F&M will face Gwynedd Mercy at 5:00 p.m. at the Hempfield Soccer Complex.
