Squash gears up for CSA Championships

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall will send three men to Hartford this weekend for the College Squash Association Championships at Trinity College. The Diplomats will have two players in the main draw and an additional player in the second draw.

F&M's No. 1 Gabriel de Melo and No. 2 Guillherme de Melo will compete for the individual national championship in the 32-man draw as the respective 17th and 20th seeds. The Diplomats No. 3, Sadiq Madraswala, will compete in the "B Draw."

Gabriel de Melo (15-7), a sophomore, has faced eight of his potential opponents this season, including two matches against Navy's 21st seeded Nils Mattson. Mattson ended de Melo's freshman campaign at last year's tournament. The pair met twice this season with de Melo and Mattson splitting the matches. de Melo also defeated the 7th seeded Jim Bristow of Rochester, as well as the 20th seed, Cornell's Alexander Domenick.

In addition to the loss to Mattson, de Melo was defeated by fourth seeded Parth Sharma (Trinity), eighth seeded Kenneth Chan (Yale), 16th seeded Chris Hanson (Dartmouth), 18th seeded Kush Mahan (Bates), and "B-draw" selection, Mark Froot (Penn).

Guillherme de Melo (19-3) has only faced one ranked opponent on the draw, Cornell's Chris Sachive. de Melo took that match in five. Madraswala (14-8) is the 59th entry in the weekend and 81st ranked player competing. He has not yet faced any ranked opponents this year. The senior has posted a 3-3 record at the CSA individual championships over the course of his career.
