LANCASTER, Pa. - After opening the season with three top ten opponents hailing from the Ivy League, #11 Franklin & Marshall's men's squash team breathed a sigh of relief with #22 George Washington up on the docket. The 2009-10 Diplomats (1-3) did what every other F&M squash team had done against the Colonials (4-3) in the previous 31 meetings - win. F&M collected its first victory of the season in convincing fashion, with a 9-0 sweep of GW Sunday afternoon.
Seven of the nine matches contested were 3-0 sweeps for f&M. No. 1 Gabriel de Melo (1-3) picked up his first victory of the season with an 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 win over Omar Sobhy, while his brother, Guillherme moved to 3-1 at No. 2, surrendering 11 points in a 3-0 win. He held Jose Calderon scoreless in the first game.
No. 4 Sadiq Madraswala (2-2) moved within a victory of the 40th win in his career dropping just eight points to Player Haines. No. 3 Juan Lopez (1-3), No. 6 Pat Cunningham (1-3) and No. 8 Ben Haack (1-3) each picked up their first collegiate victories to move to 1-3 on the season.
The win closes out competition in the first semester for F&M. The Diplomats return to action on January 15 for a match against Connecticut College at Wesleyan.
