Diplomats Trump Bates at CSA Championships
LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall avenged its January loss to Bates with a victory in the Hoehn Cup 11th/12th place match at the CSA Championships. The Diplomats (13-10) also avenged last year's loss in the same match. The teams swapped spots in the national rankings for the second time this season as the result of the F&M win.
When the teams met back on January 17th, Bates was ranked 12th and F&M 11th. The Lewistown contingent, knocked off the Lancasterian side, reversing the standings in the next CSA poll release. F&M's win today leaves the Diplomats ranked 11th the country.
F&M got wins from Guillherme de Melo, Juan Lopez, Zarir Aibara, Pat Cunningham, and Chris Gagnier. The Diplomats reversal of fortune was a result of wins by Aibara and Gagnier that had been losses in the first meeting.
Aibara (10-12) avenged his January loss to Nicholas Echeverria in five. The fifth was a tight game, but Aibara triumphed 13-11 to seal the win. Chris Gagnier, who lost to Patrick Williams in five the first time around, used a 16-14 marathon win in the first to propel himself to a 3-0 sweep.
Guillherme de Melo (19-3) won his eighth straight with second win over Jordan Greenberg this season.
The win wraps the team competition this season, however, F&M will be represented at the CSA individual championships in two weeks.
