Diplomats Roll Up 3-1 Weekend
The Franklin & Marshall men went 3-1 on the first weekend of the second half of the season. The #9 Diplomats (8-3) cruised through the Pioneer Valley Invitational unscathed, dumping #19 Amherst 9-0 on Friday night, before blanking #22 Wesleyan and #12 Bates on Saturday.
#7 Dartmouth spoiled F&M's bid for a perfect weekend, shutting out the Diplomats, 9-0, ending F&M's seven-match winning streak. Dartmouth is the lowest-ranked team to defeat F&M this season, and is the only team that shutout the Diplomats this season.
Chris Hanson trumped Gabriel de Melo (6-2) in the marquee matchup of the weekend. The Big Green's top player handed the Diplomats' star an 11-7, 11-7, 11-1 setback, his first in five matches. de Melo's 3-0 win over Bates' will Katz on Saturday was the 35th of the junior's career, and his fourth over Katz in the past two seasons.
Guillherme de Melo (8-3), Pat Cunningham (7-4), Mauricio Sedano (4-3), and Justin Singh (8-3) all went 3-1 on the weekend. Gui de Melo and Singh saw the longest active winning streaks on the squad halted at seven matches.
F&M rested several players over Friday and Saturday's matches, providing John White's squad with an opportunity to display its depth. Wick Clothier went to 2-0 on the season with a 3-1 win over Wesleyan's No. 8 Shivan Bhavnani, 11-4, 10-12, 11-2, 11-4. Jack Cutler upped his record to 5-0 with a 3-0 win in the sixth position against Wesleyan and a 3-2 win in the ninth flight in the match against Bates.
Freddy Hernandez moved to 3-0 with a 3-0 victory over Wesleyan's No. 7, Luke Wherry. Making their collegiate debuts, Ryan Mullaney and Ben Ng each posted 3-0 victories against Wesleyan.
Franklin & Marshall returns to action on Friday against Colby and Yale at Yale.
