Herbert Honored as Top Male Athlete

LANCASTER, Pa. – Sarah Meisenberg and Justin Herbert
received the highest honor Franklin & Marshall bestows on their
athletes, the Karvasales and Garrigues awards. The Karvasales
Women’s Scholar-Athlete Award is given to the top athlete
from F&M’s 14 female sports teams. The Garrigues
Outstanding Senior Athlete for Men Award is given to the top male
athlete. Criteria involves performance as an athlete and in the
classroom. Voting is conducted by all head coaches in the athletic
department.
These awards could not have been given to more deserving athletes.
Both dominated their respective sports, both perform well in the
classroom, and more importantly, both are the most humble people a
person could meet.
Sarah Meisenberg (Severna Park, MD/Severn School)
does not only play two sports, she dominates in both. She has made
her mark on both the basketball and lacrosse record books.
Meisenberg is a four-time All-American in basketball and a
seven-time All-American in lacrosse. She has been named to the
All-Centennial First Team three times in both sports. She was the
2007-2008 Basketball CC Player of the Year.
Meisenberg was a two-year captain in basketball, starting in every
game from her sophomore to senior year. She currently ranks first
in career free throws (430), first in career assists (367), third
in career steals (235) and fifth in career points (1529).
Meisenberg has started in more games than any Diplomat with 101
starts.
She served as captain on the lacrosse team as well.
Meisenberg has registered a point in every game she played in
except one this season. She became the fifth member of
F&M’s 100 assists club and has tallied 133 career goals.
Meisenberg currently ranks tenth on the school’s career point
list with 233 and second in career draw controls (193). She is the
career leader in caused turnovers (112) and in ground balls
(215).
Justin Herbert (New Milford, PA/Blue Ridge)
served as captain of the wrestling team for the third consecutive
season. He finished the season with a 23-13 record and was one of
52 wrestlers selected for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship
Tournament. He was F&M’s first NCAA Qualifier in 11
years.
Herbert wrapped his career with a record of 82-39. He also
finished with a school record of 35 pins, a record that stood for
75 years. He ranks fifth on the F&M career wins list, one
victory ahead of Mike Parziale ’06 and one behind Hall of
Famer, Vic Bernardino ’94. He was a two-time National
Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American, and is a
candidate for the honor again this year.
He also has accumulated a few academic honors. Herbert won the
Structural Geology prize in 2008, the Geology Prize in 2009. He has
been accepted to post doctoral programs at five prestigious
universities on the east coast.
Chelsea Meerbach (York, PA/York) received the
SACC Sportsmanship Award. The Sportsmanship is awarded to an
athlete who demonstrates the most sportsman like behavior as
selected by his or her peers. Alex Raup (State College,
PA/State College) and Mollie Ruben (Jamestown,
RI/Hingham (MA)) were honored with the Delphic Award. The
Delphic Award is given to the male and female senior athletes who
have complete their fall semester with the highest cumulative Grade
Point Average.
