Diplomats Place Four at Navy Classic
ANAPOLIS, Md. - Franklin & Marshall finished fifth as team at the 32nd annual Navy Classic and placed four wrestlers in the top six.
Jake Bucha was highest place finisher for the Diplomats finishing fourth at 133 pounds. Matt Fullowan (174), Colin Ely (197) and Dan Canfield (285) each placed sixth respectively for F&M.
Bucha won his first two matches before running into eventual champion David Marble, of Bucknell, in the quarterfinals. Marble majored Bucha 13-3.
Bucha defeated Campbell's Richie Apolinar, 9-3, in the consolation semifinals before losing to George Mason's Denny Herndon, 3-2, in the consolation final.
Fullowan dropped a 4-1 decision to Bucknell's Shane Riccio, the eventual champion, in the quarterfinals at 174 before beating Navy's Paul Deluca and Virginia Tech's John Dickson, 5-2 and 4-2, to reach the consolation semifinals.
Fullowan lost a 2-0 decision to Virginia Tech's Anthony Trongone in the consolation semifinals and fell to Seth Csaszar, of Dusquesne, in the fifth-place match.
Ely knocked off Navy's Chance Rauscher, 4-3, in the quarterfinals at 197 before being majored by eventual champion, Bucknell's Jay Hahn, in the semifinals. He then got decked in 51 seconds by Charles Carafano, of Navy, in the consolation semifinals before dropping an 8-4 decision to Chance Rauscher, of Navy, in the fifth-place match.
Canfield beat West Virginia's Justin Haines before getting pinned by eventual champion, Virginia Tech's Dan Bruce, in the 285-poud semifinals.
Canfield lost 3-2 to Navy's Mike Landis is consolation semifinals and 2-1 to Bloomsburg's Zach Walsh in the fifth-place match.
F&M finished with 33 points behind Navy (137), which won its 17th title, Virginia Tech (126.5), Bucknell (120.5) and Bloomsburg (107).
The Diplomats return to the mat when they travel to Princeton on Dec. 4.
