F&M Drops Davidson to Finish 1-2 at Pitt. Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Following a pair of losses against top-notch competition, Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team rallied to dominate Davidson and finish with a 1-2 mark at Saturday's Pitt. Duals. The Diplomats opened with losses to Pittsburgh (46-0) and Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponent Binghamton (38-12) before securing their 39-10 victory against the Wildcats.

With the trio of decisions, F&M now holds a 2-3, 0-2 EIWA record on the year.

In F&M's opening dual, No. 23-ranked Pittsburgh recorded early bonus points with a major decision and a fall in the opening two matches. Paddy Quinlan put together a hard-fought effort at 141 but was ultimately upended by Nick Zanetta, who recently placed eighth at the Midlands, while the Diplomats' Sam Butler was narrowly edged in the first sudden victory period by a 5-3 score.

Against Binghamton, F&M led early on by a 9-6 score heading into 149, after Dan Martoccio (133) pinned his opponent 1:59 of the first, and Paddy Quinlan followed with a convincing 10-3 decision at 141. However, the Bearcats followed with three-straight wins to pull ahead 23-9. Jimmy Stillerman temporarily stopped the bleeding at 174 with an 18-12 decision before Binghamton closed out the contest with three consecutive victories.

The Diplomats got back to their winning ways against Davidson by winning seven of their nine matchups, which included six pins. Edgar Garcia (125), Martoccio (133) and Quinlan (141) kicked off action with three straight falls to give F&M an early 18-0 cushion.

After Davidson cut the deficit to 12 with a pair of decisions, Robbie King  (165) and Jimmy Stillerman (0:26) followed with opening-period pins, while a fall by Anthony Mancini (4:05) and a decision by Corey Kerkesner (5-4) closed out the rout.
