The Diplomats Drop Two at South Beach Duals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Franklin & Marshall's Division I wrestling team battled a pair of top teams in the opening day of the South Beach Duals in Florida, falling short to Binghamton by a hard-fought 31-15 tally, before concluding Friday with a 25-12 defeat against the Big 10's Michigan St.

In its first year, the event features 12 teams and a total of six mats with continuous dual-meet competition with matches at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

In the opening dual of the day against EIWA-foe Binghamton, the Diplomats fell behind early by a 7-0 score after dropping an 8-0 major at 125 pounds and a 6-0 decision at 133 pounds. Binghamton forfeited 141 pounds to deliver six points to F&M and pull the score within one, however, the Bearcats followed with four straight wins to go ahead 25-6.

Another forfeit at 184 handed six more points to the Diplomats, and after a pin from Binghamton at 197 pounds, F&M closed out the bout on a high note with a 3-1 decision win from Antonio Pelusi (285 pounds).

Against Michigan St., the Diplomats suffered a major decision loss at 125 pounds before the Spartans forfeited 133 pounds to give F&M the lead at 6-4. The advantage was short-lived as Michigan St. rattled off four consecutive victories to jump in front at 19-6. Josh Young ended the run at 174 pounds, downing Austen Malczewski with a 7-3 decision to pull F&M within 10.

Each of the next two contests went the Spartans way, however, the Diplomats held tough with narrow decision losses. Reid Robilotto battled at 197 pounds but came up just short in a tough 5-3 loss. Pelusi wrapped up action with his second victory of the day, rolling past Matthew Okaiye with a 6-1 decision that delivered three points to F&M.

The Diplomats return to the mats tomorrow, closing out the second and final day of the South Beach Duals with bouts against North Dakota St. (11:00 a.m.) and No. 22 Rider (1:00 p.m.).
