Phillips Lifts Hopkins Over F&M
LANCASTER, Pa. - Kristin Phillips sank the game-winning free throws in the final seven seconds of the game to lead Johns Hopkins past Franklin & Marshall 66-64 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Thursday.
Phillips grabbed the offensive rebound off Siobhan Callanan's layup and drew the foul, connecting on both shots from the line to finish 12-for-13 from the charity stripe on the night for a game-high 27 points. She also led on the boards with 15 for a double-double and help the Blue Jays (10-10, 8-5 CC) avenge a two-point loss to the Diplomats (11-9, 8-5 CC) earlier in the season.
Sarah Meisenberg paced F&M with 20 points, setting a career high with 14 free throws made on 16 attempts. Amanda Miceli recorded her second straight double figure game with 14 points. As a team, F&M went 35-for-42 from the line to set a new school record for most free throws made and attempted in a game.
With under 10 minutes to play in the game, Hopkins extended its two-point lead to seven off a jumper by Callanan and consecutive three-pointers by Stephanie Fong to take a 59-52 advantage. Miceli scored the next four points for F&M to make it 59-56 with 6:53 left.
At 5:19, Meisenberg drew the foul on her way to the basket and made both free throws at 59-58. Lyndsay Burton got three points for the Blue Jays, but Miceli answered with the layup and the free throw to get it within one again.
The teams exchanged free throws and Meisenberg made one of two from the line to knot the game at 64-all with 35 seconds remaining. Hopkins gained possession and Phillips got two rebounds with the second one drawing the foul with seven seconds left.
The Diplomats made one last attempt, but Burton was there to make the block on the final shot from behind the arc to seal the win.
Phillips scored six of the opening 14 points for the Blue Jays to take a 14-5 lead at the 14:41 mark. A 9-3 run by F&M cut the deficit to 17-14, but Caitlin Sloane drained a three-pointer to push the lead to 20-14
Free-throw shooting gave the Diplomats the lead on two occasions with the latter coming at 23-22 with 3:38 left in the first half. Hopkins closed out the half with an 11-2 run for an 8-point lead into the locker room.
The Blue Jays hit eight three points on the night to F&M's one from beyond the arc.
