LANCASTER, Pa. – Colleen Bott hit a pair of free-throws late in the second half to lift Franklin & Marshall over Gettysburg 51-48 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday night. The Diplomats (16-6, 13-4 CC) swept the series between the two squads and have won four straight, while the Bullets (11-11, 9-8 CC) fall for the third game in a row.
Bott turned a missed jumper by Megan Pauley into an offensive rebound with 6:27 left to play in the game. Bott put the ball right back up and forced the foul from Alyssa Oursler. The junior went to the charity stripe and converted two free-throws to put the Diplomats up by one, 42-41.
Sara Kinsley responded by making free-throws of her own to bring the Bullets within one, 44-43, with 5:12 left to play. Ten seconds later, Elizabeth Snyder went to the free-throw line hitting both to give F&M the three-point lead, 46-43.
Gettysburg did not allow the Diplomats to pull away as Alyssa Oursler hit a jumper with 2:35 remaining to make it a one possession game, 48-46. F&M proved to be too much with Pauley converting a layup on the Diplomats next possession and Kristina McCarthy draining the front end of her free-throws with five seconds left in the contest to give F&M the win.
In a first half that saw 12 lead changes and three ties, the two teams traded buckets for the entire first half. With no one taking control of the game, the largest lead of the period for either team came with 3:20 left when Allison Bauer nailed a three-pointer to put the Diplomats up by four, 25-21. Just before the break Oursler hit a jumper to bring the Bullets within two, 25-23, going into halftime.
The two sides again came out in the second frame, trading buckets until 15:28 when Oursler tied the game, 29-29, for the sixth time and the Bullets went on a 12-4 run through-out the next five minutes. Gettysburg led by as many as eight but the Diplomats stayed within striking distance, putting together a 9-2 run of their own that featured Bott's made free-throws to take the lead.
Snyder paced F&M with a game-high 15 points, while Bauer had an all-around night with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Pauley also saw double-figures, pouring in 12 points in the win.
The Bullets' Caroline Murphy and Oursler each had 10 points a piece with Oursler grabbing nine boards. Kinsley pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats host Swarthmore in CC play. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
