Diplomats Dealt First loss

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Despite a career-high 27 points from Alexa Barbush, Franklin & Marshall fell to Ursinus 48-45 in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday night.  The loss drops the Diplomats to 3-1 (1-1 CC) while the Bears improve to 3-1 (1-0) CC.

After grabbing the 23-22 lead in the opening minutes of the second half, F&M was marred by poor shooting and turnovers as Ursinus jumped ahead with an 18-5 run to go up by a score of 41-28 with 6:44 left in the game.

Barbush took over the contest from there, landing a layup on the next possession to end the Bear's run and kick off a 10-2 F&M streak that cut the lead to five with 2:44 left on the clock.

The Diplomats' defense came up with a key stop on the next possession, followed by a short jumper off the glass from Kristina McCarthy to bring F&M to within three at 43-40 with 2:26 remaining in the contest.

The Bears extended the lead to five when the Diplomats attempted to save time by rolling the ball up the court and caused a turnover with 37 seconds left that led to a Ursinus jumper from the corner.

Elizabeth Snyder drained a clutch 3-pointer on the next possession to pull within two at 45-43 with 23 seconds left. After a quick foul from F&M, the Bears nailed a pair of free throws to make it a two possession game with only 21 seconds left on the clock.

Barbush landed a jumper with one second left to make the score 48-45, but time ran out and the Diplomats were handed their first loss of the season.

Fifteen of Barbush's career-high 27 points came in the second half. The senior guard shot 12-for-21 from the floor on the night. F&M shot a season-low 33.3 percent, including only 28.9 percent in the second half.

The defense was a highlight for the Diplomats as F&M forced 22 turnovers during the contest, but also committed 19 of its own. The Diplomats were strong on the offensive glass, outrebounding Ursinus 17-12.

F&M returns to the court on Thursday to take on Haverford at the Mayser Center. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
