Diplomats Drop OT Heartbreaker

WESTMINSTER, Md. – A career-high 32 points from Elizabeth Snyder fueled a late second-half comeback to force overtime, but Franklin & Marshall was unable to pull out a win, dropping a 71-70 contest to Centennial Conference (CC) opponent McDaniel on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats record falls to 3-3, 1-3 CC with the loss, while the Green Terror improve to 3-3, 1-2 CC.

Snyder shot 12-for-20 from the floor and 4-for-6 from three en route to her career day.

McDaniel had a 14-point lead with 14:47 left to go in the second half until the Diplomats began to chip away at the 44-30 deficit. F&M pulled to within five at 56-51 with 5:40 left in the game when Emma Lisle used a pump fake at the top of the key to shake off a defender and drove to the basket for an easy layup.

On the next possession, Lisle was fouled and went 1-for-2 from the stripe to pull the Diplomats within four. The Green Terror extended the lead back to eight with 3:28 remaining until six consecutive points from Snyder made it a two-point game at 60-58 with 1:34 left.

F&M forced a jump ball on McDaniel's following possession and regained control with 1:01 left in the contest.  The next time down the court Snyder lobbed a pass inside to Kristina McCarthy who laid the ball in off the glass to tie the game 60-60 with 46 seconds left.

McDaniel tossed up a 3-pointer with 22 seconds remaining but failed to find the bottom of the net. The Diplomats had an opportunity to steal the win with seven seconds left to play when Kara Bacile found Alexa Barbush in the corner for the game-winner, but the Green Terror blocked the shot as time expired.

In overtime, Snyder picked up right where she left off in regulation, draining a 3-pointer to give F&M its first lead of the contest at 63-60 with 4:48 left. The Green Terror answered with a 3-pointer of their own to tie the game 63-63 with 4:24 remaining.

McCarthy received the ball down in the paint on the next possession and had a chance for a three-point play after landing the layup and forcing a McDaniel foul.  The junior forward failed to hit the shot from the stripe, but Lisle pulled down the offensive board to retain possession.  Bacile found Snyder who landed a long 3-pointer to put the Diplomats up 68-63 with 3:33 left in overtime.

McDaniel again pulled to within three until Snyder pulled down an offensive rebound from a McCarthy miss and laid it in to extend the lead back to five with 2:29 left.  The Green Terror scored four-consecutive points to pull within one at 70-69 with 1:18 remaining.

McDaniel collected an offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer with 13 seconds left on the clock and stepped to the line when F&M was called for a foul. Emma Wingerd landed a pair of clutch free throws with six seconds remaining to give the Green Terror a one-point lead at 71-70.

The Diplomats pushed the ball up for the court for a last-second attempt to win the game but failed to find an open shooter before time ran out on the heartbreaking overtime loss.

F&M dominated in the paint scoring 38 points compared to only 12 from McDaniel. However, the Diplomats turned the ball over 26 times, resulting in 24 points.

Snyder scored 17 of her career-high 32 points in the second half, and the senior guard recorded a team-high eight points in overtime.

Barbush reached double figures in scoring with 17 points on 6-for-18 shooting. She went 5-for-6 from the stripe, and passed Cathy Belser for second place on F&M's all-time free throws made list with 338. Barbush also had a career-high 11 rebounds on the afternoon.

Lisle hit a number of key baskets down the stretch and finished the game with career-highs in both points (13) and rebounds (18).

The Diplomats look to end their three-game losing streak when F&M travels to York (Pa.) on Tuesday. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
