LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's basketball team took home the title at the Terry Greene Tip-Off Memorial Tournament for the first time since 2009 with a 70-62 victory over Elizabethtown on Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats got off to a 2-0 start on the year for the first time since 2012 while the Blue Jays dropped to 1-2.
Quick shooting from Pilone and center Kristin Hamill got F&M out to a 10-3 lead to start the game. A late 5-0 run to end the quarter brought Elizabethtown within seven at 18-11.
A jumper from Devandria Bernard got the Diplomats going to start the second quarter. F&M kept the pace, tallying 10 points in the paint during the second period, including a layup from Cat Weber. AnnMarie DiCarlo knocked down a three with one minute left to help F&M to their largest lead of the night at 38-21 before going into halftime.
The Blue Jays looked to came within nine points five minutes into the second half, but buckets from Pisani and Erica Brown kept the momentum in F&M's favor. Pilone took the ball to the basket to finish the third quarter to extend the Diplomats' lead 53-42 at the break.
Elizabethtown threated to take the lead, coming within four with two minutes left in the game, but consistent free throw shooting from Pilone and Pisani ensured the Diplomats' 70-62 victory.
Pilone led all scorers with 26 points while going 7-for-7 from behind the free throw line. Pisani tallied 13 points on the day with six assists. Sarosha Parsons led the team with eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Diplomats open Centennial Conference (CC) play on Tuesday, traveling to Gettysburg for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
