LANCASTER, Pa. – A 7-2 run to start the fourth quarter helped the Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team to a 59-56 win over Ursinus on Tuesday evening. The Diplomats improved to 3-1, 1-1 CC while the Bears fell to 3-1, 0-2 CC.
Leading by four after the third quarter, F&M opened the fourth with a 7-2 run to extend their lead 51-42. A layup from Kristin Hamill brought the Diplomats' lead to seven with 3:35 left in the game. A late surge from Ursinus threatened the lead, but F&M was able to hold out for the victory.
The Diplomats took an early lead in the game with a Hamill layup bringing the score 7-4 five minutes into the action. A layup from Erica Brown brought the score to 13-10, but the Bears got the final shot to bring the score to 13-12 at the end of the first.
A layup from Cat Weber started the Diplomats on a 4-0 run in the opening minutes of the second quarter. F&M maintained a tight lead with both Brown and Haley Pilone going two-for-two from the free throw line. Ursinus ended the quarter with six unanswered points to tie the game at 24-24 going into the half.
After a quick Ursinus bucket to start the second half, a three-pointer from Pilone gave F&M its lead back at 27-26. Strong rebounding from Hamill and Sarosha Parsons helped the Diplomats outrebound the Bears 10-7 in the third quarter and garner a four-point lead of 44-40 at the end of the third.
Pilone led all players with 23 points, going seven-for-eight from the free throw line, shot 40 percent from behind the arc, and came away with four steals. Hamill followed with 14 points and nine rebounds on the day. Parsons led in both rebounds (10) and blocks (2).
The Diplomats return to action Thursday evening, taking on Haverford for a 7:00 p.m. matchup at the Mayser Center.
