Late Surge Lifts Roanoke Over F&M

ROANOKE, Va. – Taking the lead with one minute left in the third quarter, Roanoke overtook Franklin & Marshall 66-63 on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats dropped to 4-5 while the Maroons improved to 3-7.

F&M held a nine-point lead going into the second half. A three-pointer from Haley Pilone kept the Diplomats' advantage at six, but Allison Livengood delivered that go-ahead three with 48 seconds left in the third to give Roanoke the lead at 51-48.

Down by four at the start of the fourth with the score 52-48, a Kristin Hamill jumper closed the gap to two at the 8:33 mark. A three from Sarosha Parsons kept F&M within one at 56-55 with 4:48 left to play, the Maroons kept the pace and took the contest 66-63.

Erica Brown got the Diplomats on the board to start the game with a layup off the dish from Pilone at 9:19 to even the score 2-2. F&M went on a 10-0 through the first, culminating with a Pilone layup to bring the lead to 12-5 with 4:51 left in the first. The Diplomats kept the pace with a three-pointer from AnnMarie DiCarlo giving them the 26-17 lead after the first quarter.

A three from Pilone gave F&M the 10-point lead at 6:52 in the second quarter. A free throw from Brown put the Diplomats up 39-28 with 1:03 left in the half, but a Roanoke layup kept the Maroons within nine going into the break. 

Pilone led all scorers with 21 points, going 5-for-10 from behind the arc, while also tallying four rebounds and one steal. Brown led with eight rebounds and put away 11 points. Hamill recorded 17 points and five rebounds on the day.

The Diplomats return to action on Sunday, taking on Lynchburg at 12:00 p.m. in their final contest of the year.
