LANCASTER, Pa. – A decisive first quarter helped lift F&M 65-51 over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball on Tuesday evening. The Diplomats improved to 8-9, 5-7 CC while the Garnet dropped to 3-13, 1-10 CC.
Scoring remained close to start the game with F&M holding a slight advantage at 8-7 with 5:50 left in the first. Sparked by back-to-back threes from Haley Pilone, the Diplomats finished out the quarter on a 12-2 run that included buckets from Kristin Hamill and Sarosha Parsons to take the 20-9 lead at the end of the first.
AnnMarie DiCarlo got the scoring going to start the second, extending F&M's lead to 22-9 at the 8:36 mark. Swarthmore looked to change the momentum, but a Pilone three kept the 10-point lead in the Diplomats' favor with 4:51 left in the half. The Garnet was able to close the gap and go into the break down 29-22.
Back-to-back layups from Cat Weber kept the score 33-25 in F&M's favor to start the third. A three from Pilone at the 5:09 mark brought the score back to a double-digit deficit at 40-28. Sarah Pisani knocked down five points in under a minute to extend the Diplomats' lead 45-31 with 3:29 left. F&M was able to close out the third quarter with the 10-point edge of 47-37.
Lindsey Powers knocked down a three to start the fourth quarter and spread F&M's lead to fourteen. The Diplomats kept the pace and a layup for Parsons off the dish from Pisani gave F&M its largest lead of the night at 58-43 with 5:10 left to play. Pilone notched the final five points of the game to help F&M deliver the 65-51 victory.
Pilone led all scorers with 29 points, going five-for-eight from behind the arc. Hamill delivered her tenth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Pisani dished out nine assists and tallied seven points.
The Diplomats return to action on Thursday, hosting Gettysburg for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
