Rowers Fall in Chestertown

Apr 5, 2008

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Franklin and Marshall's rowers fell to Washington College in both the men's and women's races Saturday morning on the Chester River on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

The women raced with Erin Feeney at coxswain, freshman Brittany George in stroke seat, followed by Rebecca Weast, Erin Bradley, Alex Merrick, senior captain Chelsea McIntyre, senior Sarah Clark, Kate Emert and bow Caitlin Kneirim. The Diplomats lost ground from the start and while rowing a sound race, under-stroked the Shorewomen into a strong headwind, crossing the wire 24 seconds behind the home boat.

Washington's entry clocked an 8:35, followed by F&M at 8:59.

"The difference between the two varsity women's programs is still considerable," said Head Coach, Claus Wolter. "We feel good having improved over last year's performance against Washington by 28 seconds. This was their best performance so far this season, and they met all their objectives for today's race."

The Diplomats' men's crew made similar strides. F&M trailed Washington College by six seconds over the 2,000-meter course. Washington raced to a 7:48, while F&M came in at 7:54. In last year's race, Washington won by a margin of 47 seconds.

With Joseph Dernbach in the coxswain seat, F&M was stroked by freshman Conor Borak followed by Ian Clunie, Patrick Maloney, Ho Hong Lau, senior captain Ron Nahass, Daniel Falciani, William Reigel, and bow Brent Schneider.

The Diplomats' rowers are idle next weekend, and will resume competition in Conshohocken against Bryn Mawr and Haverford on Saturday, April 19.
