McLaren, Willert Power F&M Past #9 Eastern
LANCASTER, Pa. – Seniors Allison McLaren and Becky Willert each scored a pair of goals to carry Franklin & Marshall past ninth-ranked Eastern, 6-2, in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday at Tylus Field. The Diplomats improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Eagles drop to 0-2.
McLaren struck first for the Diplomats just under two minutes into the contest. Junior Maura Hennigan served a hard ball into the front of the goal, where McLaren controlled it, turned and slid a shot on the ground to the left side for a 1-0 F&M lead.
It was Willert's turn less than two minutes later as she settled a rebound off a McLaren shot and touched it home to give the Diplomats an early two-goal cushion.
Junior Chelsey Talhelm made it 3-0 in the 25th minute with a clever one-on-one move past an Eastern defender. Talhelm took a feed from sophomore Katie Cecere and found herself with just one defender to beat on the right-side edge of the circle. The junior forward then chopped the ball by the right side of her defender, slipped past her to the left and blasted a near-post strike for her first goal of the 2011 season.
Despite the early three-goal deficit, the Eagles wouldn't go away without a fight as they found the back of the cage in the 27th minute to pull within two. Off a penalty corner, Eastern sophomore Sarah Webb fired a shot towards goal that was redirected for a score by freshman Alexa Borrelli.
Eastern continued to pressure the Diplomat defense as the first stanza winded down. The Eagles earned three penalty corners and multiple looks at goal in the final minute, but were unable to capitalize and F&M took a 3-1 advantage into the half.
The Eagles pulled within 3-2 in the 45th minute as senior Yvonne Herbster one-timed a feed across the goal mouth from junior Brittany Moyer.
F&M would respond with a vengeance, however, with three goals in the ensuing six minutes to break the contest open. In the 46th minute, McLaren niftily squeezed between a pair of defenders in the center of the circle and ripped a shot that was saved by Eastern junior goalkeeper Christin Suetterlein, but Willert was in the right spot to clean up the mess for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.
McLaren notched her second goal of the day shortly thereafter to once again make it a three-goal F&M edge, before senior defender Kimmy Fisher made a run into the attacking zone and extended the Diplomat lead to 6-2 in the 51st minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Avery Koep (2-0) recorded four saves to pick up the victory, while Suetterlein (0-2) totaled seven saves in the loss.
F&M returns to action against Immaculata in non-conference play on Tuesday, September 13. Game time is set for 5:00 pm at Tylus Field.
