READING, Pa. – Allison McLaren's goal just over three minutes into overtime propelled the 18th-ranked Franklin & Marshall field hockey team to a 1-0 road victory over Alvernia in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon. The Diplomats remain perfect on the year at 4-0 with the win, while the Crusaders fall for the first time in 2011 and are now 3-1.
After a scoreless 70 minutes of regulation action, McLaren and the Diplomats were finally able to break through the Alvernia defense shortly into the overtime period. The senior forward dribbled through the left side of the Crusader defense and fired a strike to the lower-right side of the cage to give F&M the win in the 74th minute. The goal was McLaren's fourth of the year and her second game-winner.
Goalkeeper Avery Koep posted her first clean-sheet of the season with three saves to move to 4-0, while Abby Eby totaled nine saves on the day for Alvernia.
The Diplomats held the advantage in both shots (17-3) and penalty corners (10-8), including a 10-2 second-half edge in shots.
F&M will open Centennial Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Swarthmore. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
