ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall used a three-goal flurry in the second half to overcome Eastern 4-2 on Tuesday night in non-conference field hockey action. The Diplomats improved to 10-2 with the victory, while the Eagles fell to 4-8.
With the score tied at 1-1 and 20 minutes remaining, Melanie Consiglio opened the floodgates for F&M in the 51st minute. Mel Gula released a pass from the middle of the circle, which Consiglio tipped in from close range to give the Diplomats a 2-1 advantage.
In the 60th minute, F&M doubled its lead when Emily Nagle scored unassisted for her fourth goal of the season. Erin Coverdale finished off the flurry just 87 seconds later, ripping a shot from the right side to make the score 4-1. The goal was Coverdale's fifth of the season.
Eastern pulled a goal back in the 68th minute, but it proved too little too late as the Diplomats emerged with the 4-2 victory.
However, the Eagles turned around F&M's 14-2 advantage in shots and 11-2 edge in corners, scoring in the 41st minute to make the score 1-1 and set up the Diplomats' crucial run.
F&M finished the game with a 23-6 lead in shots. Ilianna Santangelo moved to 10-2 on the season after 65 minutes of action, while Nicole Berger (4-8) took the loss for Eastern.
The Diplomats return home on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg at 3:00 p.m. for a crucial homecoming game between the top two teams in the Centennial Conference.
