GLASSBORO, N.J. – For the second year in a row, Sydney Cole tallied a late 2OT goal to lift the No. 9 Franklin & Marshall's field hockey team 2-1 over Rowan on Sunday afternoon.
The Diplomats improved to a 2-0 record on the season while the Profs fell 0-2.
With two minutes left in the final overtime, Erin Coverdale crossed the ball from the right side of the field where senior forward Cole was waiting to put the ball away in the right side of the cage and tally the victory.
Rowan got its first chance to even the score eight minutes in, receiving a penalty corner, but two big saves from junior goalkeeper Ilianna Santangelo kept the Profs off the scoreboard.
In the final play of the first half, the Profs were able to even the score with Rachel Galante deflecting a shot into the back of the cage in the 35th minute to tie the game 1-1 at the half.
The Diplomats looked to gain momentum at the start of the second with two quick penalty corners in the 39th and 40th minutes but were unable to tally another goal.
Rowan looked to take the lead in the 58th minute with two penalty corners, but back-to-back saves from Santangelo kept the match even.
Though behind at the half, F&M picked up the offensive pace and ended up outshooting the Profs 24-13, with a 10-2 deficit in the overtime periods. The Diplomats also led in penalty corners 19-8.
Santangelo recorded six saves to improve to a 2-0 record while her counterpart Carly DeMarco tallied an impressive 14 saves but remained winless with a 0-2 record.
The Diplomats continue their non-conference play as F&M hosts Mary Washington on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Lancaster.
