MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – The No. 11 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team fell to No. 1 Messiah on Wednesday evening, 3-1.
F&M's record moved to 6-2 while Messiah continued with a perfect 8-0 record on the year.
Defending National Champion Messiah came out strong, quickly taking a 2-0 lead with goals in the fourth and eighth minutes.
Messiah out shot F&M 9-2 in the opening half, owning penalty corners at 2-0. F&M's goalkeeper Ilianna Santangelo recorded five saves in the frame.
The Diplomats looked to come out strong in the second with a scoring opportunity in the 46th minute. Annie Horsley took a shot off a penalty corner, but missed wide.
Sarah Schannauer came up with a big defensive save in the 49th minute off a Messiah penalty corner to keep the Diplomats within one.
F&M remained in their defensive third, holding off the Falcons, but Messiah was able to tally a goal in the 69th minute from a penalty corner to extend the lead.
The Falcons led in both shots, 19-3, and penalty corners, 10-1.
The Diplomats return to Centennial play as F&M travels to Swarthmore on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
