LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's golf team is set to open its spring slate with a busy first weekend of competition. The Diplomats begin with the Gettysburg Invite on Saturday at Hanover Country Club, before hosting the F&M Spring Invitational on Sunday at Overlook Golf Course.
Behind the impressive play of one of the Centennial Conference's (CC) top women's golfers, the Diplomats proved to be competitive throughout last season and secured their second consecutive fourth-place showing at the 2015 CC Championship.
F&M returns its top performer from last year's tournament but will need to overcome the loss of its other three competitors from the event.
Senior Kathleen Smith '16 once again leads the charge for F&M after placing second with a two-day total of 160 (83-77) at the 2015 Championship. Her finish was the highest for a Diplomat since 2010, as Smith became the program's 10th All-CC member and the first in five years.
Smith excelled throughout her junior campaign, placing in the top 10 in all seven events she participated in, and taking the individual title at the Lebanon Valley Invite in April, after pacing the field with an 84 to finish first out of 30 competing golfers. F&M combined for a 392 total at the event, good for a third-place showing out of six teams.
2016 F&M Spring Invite
F&M is set to host an invite at Overlook Golf Course in Lancaster on Sunday, its second home invitational of the year including a fall event at Foxchase Golf Club on October 4. Fellow CC school's Gettysburg, Susquehanna, McDaniel, Muhlenberg, Dickinson and Ursinus will compete at the event, as well as Eastern and Lebanon Valley.
Following the Diplomats' opening weekend of action, F&M is set to take part in another pair of invites leading up to the CC Championship, which is scheduled from April 23-24 and will be hosted by F&M at Foxchase Golf Club in Stevens, Pa.
