New Look Diplomats Pass First Test
LEXINGTON, Va. – #3 Franklin & Marshall used a balanced offense to knock off #14 Washington & Lee 11-8 on Saturday. Four different players each scored a pair of goals in the win.
The Diplomats (1-0) opened the game with a 5-0 run and never relinquished the lead. Mary McNutt scored the season's first goal 1:03 into the game. Katie Delaney became the first player to net a pair during the burst. The Generals (3-1) responded with a four-goal run of their own. Emmy Matthews scored two in the W&L run. She finished her afternoon with a hat trick. Half of W&L's goals in the spate were scored from the eight-meter mark.
Erin Dunne scored the first and final goal of the second half. Her first goal, 38 seconds into the second half, extended F&M's lead to 6-4 and sparked a three-goal run. Lauren Ehrhardt scored her second of the game 1:09 after Dunne's marker, followed by Lauren Selawski's first of the season.
W&L answered with a pair of their own to get back within two, but first-year attack Caroline Krohn popped home her second of the day at the 19:54 mark. That tally held up as the game-winner.
The Generals scored another pair to get within one, 9-8, midway through the second. Cat Serpe gave F&M a cushion near the seven-minute mark before Dunne closed out the day's scoring.
Dunne finished the game with a pair of assists and caused turnovers to go with her goals. Selawski also added two helpers to the F&M cause. Jordan Quinn caused three turnovers in her first career start on the back end.
Kelsey Hoffman worked the first 40:06 for F&M, stopping three shots and allowing six goals. Rebecca Rosen played the difference. She stopped a pair and allowed as many. Katharine Farrar stopped four shots for W&L.
Washington & Lee owned a 13-8 advantage on the draws, but the Diplomats dominated the groundwork 18-7.
F&M has scored 11 goals and won by three or less in each of its last three trips to Lexington. The 2007 and 2009 meetings both ended 11-9. F&M won the NCAA National in each of those seasons.
