SWARTHMORE, Pa. – No. 7 Franklin & Marshall defeated Swarthmore 18-8 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 11-3 and remained perfect in the CC at 5-0 while the Garnet fell to 6-6, 1-4 CC.
Swarthmore struck first early in the open stanza and the Diplomats answered with four straight to take the lead for good. Brittney Jorgenson netted the first and Ali Kelly made with 2-1 at 25:51. Emily Everdell put the Diplomats up 3-1 and Caroline Krohn found Kelly at 21:14 to make it 4-1. The Garnet scored two to come within one, 4-3, before Rachael Consoli found Krohn to put the Diplomats up 5-3.
Lucy Whitacre brought the Garnet within a goal midway through the first before Mary Mitchell and Grace Saliba scored under a minute apart to make it 7-4. Caroline Murphy score to bring Swarthmore within two, 7-5, but the Diplomats closed out the half with six unanswered to put the game out of reach. Saliba scored two with Kimberly Abruzzo handing out two helpers. Emily D'Erasmo, Krohn and Everdell all tallied goals for the Diplomats in the run and Abruzzo's goal at 1:47 put the Diplomats up 13-5 heading into the break.
F&M opened the second half by outscoring Swarthmore 4-1 to go up 17-7. Mitchell opened the half with goal on a free position while Abruzzo, Natalie Delinsky and Claire Jackson picked up the other three scores for the Diplomats. Swarthmore put one through at 14:50 and Everdell picked up the last goal for F&M at 12:53.
Kelsey Hoffman had 10 saves and improved to 9-3 while Michelle Ammerman took the loss with seven stops.
F&M outshot Swarthmore 43-23 and went 13-for-14 on clear attempts.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when F&M hosts Ursinus at 7:00 p.m.
