F&M Topples Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – The Bill Esterly era of women's soccer at Franklin & Marshall got underway with a 2-1 win at Widener on Saturday.  The Diplomats (1-0) built a 2-0 lead behind Stephanie Bartner and held on for the victory.

F&M got on the board at the start of the 20th minute when Bartner finished a pass from Carley Nicholson. In the 55th minute, Bartner played a through ball into the 18 where Selena Boro buried the eventual game winner in the left side.

Widener (1-1) got on the board at 69:20 when Alyssa Scala finished a Kelly Buckley through pass. It was the only time the Pride solved Katie Golding. She and her Widener counterpart, Vanessa Hejnas, each turned away four shots. Golding stopped three in the second half. Widener took 17 shots to F&M's 13, and had two corners while the Diplomats took none.

The Diplomats return to action on Tuesday at Alvernia. The opening tap is set for 7:00 pm.
