Yellow Jackets Take Two From Diplomats
ASHLAND, Va. – Franklin & Marshall dropped two games to Randolph-Macon in non-conference softball action on Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats (0-4) fell in the first game 6-4 in extra innings and lost the second game 7-3.
In the first game, starting pitchers Nicole Casey and Kelly Beard each pitched two shutout innings to open the contest. The Yellow Jackets (6-2) broke things open in the bottom of the third off of a Sharese Jarvis three-run homer to center field to take a 3-0 advantage.
Randolph-Macon struck again in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead into the final two frames.
Neither team scored in the sixth inning with the Diplomats seeing their first runs come in the top of the seventh.
Rachel Laufer got the F&M scoring started with an RBI single to right field that scored Samantha Ginder from second base. With two outs, Amanda Schellaci singled through the left side for a three-run RBI, to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Diplomats held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the final frame to send the contest into extra innings.
As part of the international tiebreaker rule for softball, F&M's Danielle Murphy was placed on second at the start of the eighth inning. Megan Pauley laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Murphy to third before, Malorie Sassaman hit a ground-out RBI to second to drive in Murphy to give the Diplomats their first lead, 5-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, Randolph-Macon's Carolyn Gilbertson was placed on second. Beard reached first on an error and Gilbertson advanced to third. Heather Lewis hit a single to right center to end the game, scoring Gilbertson and Beard.
Casey pitched a complete game for F&M and fell to 0-2 on the season.
Lewis was credited with the win for the Yellow Jackets, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing one hit and one run on the day. Beard pitched 6.2 innings for Randolph-Macon, allowing five hits and four runs.
In the second contest, F&M jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Ginder got things started for the Diplomats by driving home a two-run homer over the left field fence. Sassaman also touched the plate on the play.
Randolph-Macon responded quickly, getting three runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning to go up 3-2. Beard reached first on an error from Ginder that scored Lewis from first. The next two runs came from walks by pitcher Kaitlin Zampino, allowing Lacey Berry and Beard to touch home.
The next two innings were quiet for both teams as neither put up any runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Randolph-Macon got the bats cracking again, scoring on two different occasions. Jarvis singled to second base for her second RBI of the day, with Lauryn Nanny crossing the plate for the Yellow Jackets. Laura Bauer then sent a two-run homer over fence in left center to bring in Jarvis and push the lead to 6-2.
