McCabe Hits Qualifying Mark

LANCASTER, Pa. - Brittany McCabe became the first women's swimmer from Franklin & Marshall to collect 2008 gold at the Centennial Conference Championships. McCabe won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.29, making her the only swimmer to clock in under the one-minute mark. McCabe's mark is an NCAA Automatic qualifier, giving the Diplomat a shot at repeating as an All-American.

Cydney Eldh grabbed a silver medal in the 100-yard breaststroke, having been edged out by Dickinson's Kim Ogren. Ogren touched the wall at 1:08.72, .22 seconds before F&M's freshman.

Laura Bassford took the bronze medal in the 400-yard individual medley. She checked in at 4:49.95, followed by teammate Emily Zacherl at 4:55.18. Gettysburg's Keira Heath logged a 4:35.62 to take the gold medal in the event.

The team standings saw some slight reshuffling, but the biggest move of the day was Gettysburg taking a commanding 199-point lead on the field. F&M, which entered the day in sixth behind Ursinus, bumped up to fifth and put 108 between themselves and the Bears. F&M trails fourth place Dickinson by 40.5 points.

The Diplomats return to the pool for the final day of competition tomorrow morning. Preliminaries get underway at 10:00 a.m., with the final round of finals set for 6:00 p.m. The entire meet is being streamed live over B2 Networks. Free real-time results are available on GoDiplomats.com.
