Benford Earns Outstanding Field Athlete to Lead F&M to Fifth Place at CC Indoor Track Championships
CARLISLE, PA - Bryn Benford (Sr., Malvern, PA/Great Valley) earned Outstanding Field Athlete to lead the Franklin & Marshall College women's indoor track team to a fifth place finish at the 2005 Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Dickinson College.
Benford won the triple jump (34-09.00) and placed fourth in the high jump (5-00.25), fifth in the shot put (34-05.75) and 12th in the long jump (14-09.25) to finish with 19 of the Diplomats' 54 points as she became the first Franklin & Marshall track athlete to earn Outstanding Performance honors.
Overall, Franklin & Marshall dominated in the field events as Libby Haas (So., Wrightsville, PA/Eastern) cleared 5-02.25 to win the high jump and tack on 10 more points to the Diplomats total.
On the track, Tara Cooney (Jr., Douglaston, NY/St. Francis) placed sixth in the 800 meters (2:28.10) for three points, Meredith Janeczek (So., Hershey, PA/Hershey) finished sixth in the 3,000 meters (10:57.11) for three points and Karen Ziga (So., Haverford, PA/Haverford) finished seventh in the 5,000 meters (19:15.29) for two points.
In the relays, F&M finished fifth in the 4X200 (1:55.11) for four points, fifth in the 4X400 (4:20.76) for four points, fourth in the 4X800 (10:01.11) for five points and fifth in the distance medley (13:22.92) for four points.
Historically, the team's fifth place finish ties the 2004 team's placement for the second best finish by an F&M women's indoor track team at the Centennial Conference Championship Meet behind the 1995 squad's fourth place finish.
Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on March 4-5 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships.
