Diplomats Drop Spartans

YORK, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall continued its strong start to the season with a 3-1 win over York on Wednesday night in non-conference action.  The victory brings the Diplomats record to 4-0, while the Spartans drop to 1-4.

After the Diplomats took the first set 25-21, York tied up the match with a 25-21 score of their own.  From there, F&M regrouped to nab the last two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21. 

The match was a nail-biter from the beginning as the score was tied at seven different points in the first set .With the score knotted up at 16, middle hitter Katie Foreman nailed a powerful kill to put the Diplomats up by 17-16.  F&M held onto the lead for the rest of the set.  With the score 24-21, Foreman again landed a decisive kill to give the Diplomats the early lead.

After dropping the second set 25-21, the Diplomats found themselves in an 8-11 hole at the beginning of the third.  F&M answered with an impressive 12-1 run to put them up 20-12.  York countered with a brief rally to bring the score to within one point at 23-22, but the Diplomats would hang on to win the set 25-23.

The match was tight throughout, as neither team led a set by more than six points.  With F&M up 2-1, the two squads traded points throughout the fourth set before the Diplomats found themselves down 12-15.  A timeout by F&M coach Mary Kate Boland ensued, which sparked a 13-6 run to close out the contest and give the Diplomats their fourth victory in as many tries.

F&M was paced offensively by 10 kills apiece from Candice Tussing and Rosalie Frank. Meghan Hubert added 30 assists for the Diplomats in the win.

Hubert pitched in on defense as well, tallying 21 digs for the Diplomats.  Also recording double-digit digs was Caitlin Krutsick, who added 13 of her own.  Krutsick was sharp from the serve position as well, racking up three of the team's seven aces.

F&M will head to Cleveland this weekend for the Marcia French Memorial Tournament hosted by Case Western Reserve.  The Diplomats will open play on Friday against Franciscan at 5 p.m.
