Diplomats Sweep Fords to Advance to Conference Final

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team swept Haverford 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Mayser Center in the Centennial Conference (CC) semifinals.  With the victory, the Diplomats punched a ticket into tomorrow's CC finals, facing off against second-seeded Johns Hopkins at 1:00 p.m.

Haverford jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first set before a 7-0 run put F&M up 8-3.  Alyssa Sanchez paced the Diplomats in the run with three-straight service aces.  The lead did not last long, as the Fords came storming back with a 7-1 run of their own to take the 10-9 advantage.  A service error from Haverford, followed by a Kerry Rom kill put F&M back in front 11-10.

Three lead changes brought the score to 21-21 in the frame until a Sydney Seydel kill gave the Diplomats a 22-21 advantage.  F&M held onto the lead for the rest of the set, capping off the 25-23 win with another Seydel kill.

Up 1-0 after a grueling first set, the Diplomats jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the second.  F&M extended the lead to 16-5 off of an ace from Rom.  Haverford fought back with a 9-3 run to shrink the lead to five at 19-14. The comeback came too late in the set for the Fords, as the Diplomats held onto the lead and took the second set 25-18.

In the third, both teams exchanged the lead in the early going to tie the match 4-4.  A 4-0 run, capped off by a Rosalie Frank kill, put F&M up 8-4.  The Diplomats held onto the lead for the rest of the set, not allowing the Fords to pull to within four points as they finished off the sweep with a 25-16 victory.

Three F&M players recorded double-digit kills, led by Candice Tussing who notched 14.  Caroline Hubbard tallied 36 assists, while Sanchez finished the match with six aces.

Sanchez was instrumental on defense as well, registering 20 digs on the afternoon.  Caitlin Krutsick and Tussing tallied 10 digs apiece.

Tomorrow, the Diplomats host defending CC-champion Johns Hopkins in the finals.  Earlier in the season, F&M defeated the Blue Jays 3-1.
