Diplomats Fall to Blue Jays in Conference Final

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking 3-0 match against Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference (CC) finals, Sunday at the Mayser Center.  The Diplomats end their successful season with an 18-14 record.

The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the opening set.  F&M won the next two points to tie the match at 3-3 off of an attack error by the Blue Jays.  Johns Hopkins grabbed the lead in the next point and held it until a Julie Harvey kill tied the frame 6-6.  With the Blue Jays leading 11-8, Johns Hopkins went on a 7-1 run to take the commanding 19-9 advantage.  The 10-point deficit was too much for the Diplomats to overcome as the Blue Jays finished out the frame 25-17.

Up 1-0 in the match, Johns Hopkins pulled ahead 4-1 early in the second.  F&M took the next two points to cut the lead to one with a 4-3 score.  The Blue Jays battled, winning the next three points to take the 7-3 lead.  The Diplomats threatened to tie the set when they pulled to within one at 13-12.  After a Johns Hopkins timeout, the Blue Jays took four out of the next five points to go ahead 17-13.

F&M began to mount a comeback after back-to-back kills from Candice Tussing and an error on the Blue Jays tied the set 17-17.  Johns Hopkins reclaimed the lead on the next point and never surrendered it, finishing out the second set 25-22 to take the 2-0 lead in the match.

After a tough loss in the second, the Diplomats claimed an early 3-1 lead in the third.  The Blue Jays came back to tie the match 5-5 and took the lead on the next point off of an attack error by the Diplomats.  F&M reclaimed the lead at 7-6 with a kill from Tussing.  The Diplomats stayed out in front until the Blue Jays took the 11-10 advantage later in the frame.

Battling to stay in the match, F&M kept the score close and jumped back out in front 16-15 off of another kill from Tussing.  However, the lead was short-lived as Johns Hopkins reclaimed the advantage and closed out the set on a 9-4 run.  The 25-19 win in the third set sealed the sweep for the Blue Jays and earned Johns Hopkins its second-straight CC championship.

Tussing paced the Diplomats' offense with 11 kills, while Caroline Hubbard tallied 26 assists.  Alyssa Sanchez led the defense with 20 digs.
