Diplomats Open 2014 with Shutout of Chargers

LANCASTER, Pa. – With the score close in the opening set, a late run gave the Diplomats a 1-0 lead before F&M took the next two sets to pick up the 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-13, 25-19) over Lancaster Bible College (LBC) on Friday night in non-conference volleyball action. The Diplomats moved to 1-0 while the Chargers fell to 0-1.

Both squads battled in the first set as LBC held a 9-8 advantage before F&M rallied to score five of the next eight points and take a 14-11 lead. The Chargers came to within two at 15-13, but a kill by Katie Foreman, followed by an attack error on LBC and another kill from Ellie Ezekiel made it 18-13. The Diplomats never allowed the Chargers to get within three again en route to the 25-20 first-set win.

The Diplomats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second thanks to consecutive kills from Kelsey Michenko, and Foreman. F&M continued to dominate taking a 15-6 lead. Ezekiel clinched the set for the Diplomats with a kill to give F&M a commanding 2-0 lead. 

The third set began similar to the first as the Diplomats led 11-10. Both teams traded points back and fourth as F&M continued to lead 16-15 until the Diplomats rattled off four straight points, due to attack errors by LBC, to take a 20-16 advantage. F&M went on to win the set 25-19 and complete the sweep. 

Michenko led the Diplomats with eight kills, followed by Emily Gerard's six and Ezekiel's five, while Mary Leneweaver tallied a team-high 17 digs. Caroline Hubbard recorded a double-double, notching 29 assists to go along with 12 digs. As a team, F&M totaled eight service aces lead by three from Kelsey Morgan.

F&M continues the Crosstown Crossover tomorrow when the Diplomats take on host Elizabethtown at 2:00 p.m. followed by Penn St.  – Berks at 4:00 p.m.
