YORK, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's volleyball team got its 2015 campaign off to a strong start with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-23) victory over York College on Tuesday night. The win gave the Diplomats a 1-0 record on the year and extended F&M's 25-22 lead in the all-time series between the two schools. York fell to 0-1 with the defeat and has now lost the last two meetings with F&M.
The Diplomats came out strong and recorded a comfortable 25-19 victory in the first set. F&M tallied 13 kills and a .294 hitting percentage in the frame.
F&M was even more dominant in the second set, committing just one hitting error while still recording seven kills. The Diplomats were able to ride this clean hitting to a 25-14 victory in set number two.
The third set saw F&M post its highest number of hitting errors (8), and as a result the Spartans were able to push the Diplomats harder than in previous frames. F&M was nonetheless able to close out the match with a 25-23 victory in the set.
Junior Ellie Ezekiel was the only Diplomat to reach double-digit kills, however strong performances from fellow junior Rachel Umberger (9 kills, .471 hitting percentage) and freshman Barbara Kapustin (7 kills) combined to provide ample offense for F&M. Allison Edelstein compiled a career high 32 assists to lead the Diplomats, while Alyssa Sanchez led the way with 11 digs.
The Diplomats return to action this Friday in the Mayser Center by hosting Penn St.-Berks at 7:00 p.m in the first match of the Crosstown Crossover.
