LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall hosted Ursinus on Saturday for its first home Centennial Conference (CC) match of the 2016 volleyball season, dealing the Bears a 3-0 defeat. The Diplomats improved to 9-5, 1-1 CC while Ursinus fell to 5-5, 0-3 CC with the loss.
The Bears stayed close early on at 11-10, but a 6-0 run on the serve of Allison Edelstein, thanks to one ace and kills from Sarah Landry and Christine Yoo, gave F&M a 16-10 edge. Ursinus never got closer than two as the Diplomats held on for a 25-22 win in the first. Landry added five kills in the first-set victory.
F&M grew even more dominant in the second, and never trailed after taking six of the first nine points in the frame. The lead grew to 17-9 after a kill by Cassie Garison, and the Bears never recovered as an Ellie Ezekiel kill closed out a 25-13 second set. Ezekiel totaled five kills in the frame.
Ursinus put up a fight in the third, leading throughout the middle of the set. However, five straight points on Landry's serve gave the Diplomats a 16-13 advantage. The deficit grew as large as four, and the Bears never erased the gap as F&M rolled to the 25-21 victory to clinch the match.
Ezekiel led the Diplomat offense with 10 kills, while Garison logged eight and hit .438 on the day. Edelstein notched 35 assists as F&M recorded 41 total kills.
Mary Leneweaver pulled out 20 digs to lead the defense, while Ezekiel added 13. Yoo and Landry teamed up for three block assists at the net.
The Diplomats return to CC action on Wednesday, visiting Haverford at 7:00 p.m.
